Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to questions we are often asked before a first consultation. For anything not covered here, please contact us.
Is there a charge for the first consultation?
No. The initial consultation is free of charge, either at our office (about 3 minutes on foot from Exit 11, Kawanishi-noseguchi Station, Hankyu Railway) or online by video conference. We provide a quotation, and an engagement begins only once you are satisfied with it.
What are the steps from enquiry to engagement?
Contact us by the enquiry form, telephone or email. We arrange a free initial consultation to understand your situation, then propose a scope of work and a quotation. Once you agree, we sign an engagement and begin.
Can you work with clients outside Kawanishi?
Yes. We are based in Kawanishi, Hyogo and serve clients mainly in the Kansai region, and clients across Japan through video conferences and electronic exchange of documents.
Can we consult you in English?
Yes. Consultations are available in Japanese or English, including for Japanese subsidiaries of foreign companies and engagements that involve overseas parent companies or advisers.
How much are your accounting and tax advisory fees?
As an example, retainer fees start from JPY 22,000 per month (including tax) based on around two hours of consultation per month. Fees vary with the size of your business (revenue, transaction volume, etc.) and the frequency and length of consultations. A specific quotation is provided after a free initial consultation.
What does an advisory engagement include?
Day-to-day accounting and tax consultations, monthly review of trial balances and accounting treatment, updates on tax reforms, and advice on tax planning and cash flow. The frequency of consultations can be tailored to your needs.
Will a CPA and certified tax accountant handle our advisory engagement personally?
Yes. Every consultation is handled personally by Naoki Hama, the principal and a CPA and certified tax accountant. He explains matters as clearly as possible, avoiding jargon, and gives each client attentive, personal support.
Can you handle year-end closing and tax filing?
Annual year-end closing and tax filing are handled as a review of the financial statements and tax returns you prepare. This falls outside the advisory retainer and is quoted separately. We do not provide bookkeeping, year-end payroll adjustment or statutory report preparation.
Can you advise on inheritance or business succession?
Inheritance and business succession are highly specialised areas, so we do not handle them ourselves; we will introduce a specialist tax accountant.
Do you advise on transfer pricing for mid-sized companies?
Yes. Any company transacting with overseas subsidiaries, parent companies and the like (including overseas branches) is affected. Contemporaneous Local File documentation is mandatory where the previous year's related-party transactions total JPY 5 billion or more, or intangible transactions total JPY 300 million or more. However, transactions that are not subject to contemporaneous documentation may also be examined in a tax audit. Whether or not documentation is mandatory, high-risk transactions need transfer pricing attention, and mid-sized and smaller companies also need to be prepared.
Can small businesses get advice on decarbonisation?
Yes. You can start from questions such as where to begin, or how to respond to a customer asking for your CO₂ emissions. We advise on current-state analysis and roadmaps, emissions calculation methods, and the use of subsidies and tax incentives.
Can you prepare subsidy application documents?
We advise on using subsidies and tax incentives, but we do not prepare documents that are reserved by law to administrative scriveners (gyoseishoshi), such as licence and permit applications. Where needed, we introduce a partner scrivener.
Are the fees shown inclusive of tax?
Yes. All amounts on this website include consumption tax. Fees vary with scope and transaction volume, and a formal quotation is provided after the initial consultation.
